What is Flow?

Flow is a gentle, non-invasive treatment for depression that works directly with your brain’s natural electrical signals.

Depression affects an area called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which helps regulate mood and emotional wellbeing. When this region becomes underactive, it can lead to persistent low mood, loss of interest, changes in sleep or appetite, and difficulty concentrating.

The Flow headset delivers a very low electrical current (2mA – similar to the power of a AA battery) to the DLPFC. This stimulation helps restore healthier activity in brain cells, targeting depression at its source and relieving symptoms over time.

What can Flow do for depression?

Flow has been extensively researched and is backed by the largest clinical trial of its kind, published in Nature Medicine in 2024. Results show:

  • 77% of users see clinical improvement within 3 weeks
  • 57% no longer meet the criteria for depression after 10 weeks

These findings were confirmed in a placebo-controlled trial conducted by King’s College London, the University of East London, and UTHealth Houston. NHS services have also published positive results, including reports of up to a 75% reduction in suicidal thoughts.

Today, more than 30,000 people across Europe use Flow. Side effects are rare and generally mild, such as temporary skin irritation or headaches. No serious side effects have been reported.

Is Flow for me?

Flow is certified to treat unipolar Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adults aged 18 and over. It can be used on its own, or alongside antidepressants and psychological therapies.

If you have depression with other conditions, Flow may still be appropriate, but it is considered off-label for use without an MDD diagnosis. While a prescription is not required, we always recommend discussing treatment options with your doctor before starting Flow or making changes to your current care plan.
