What are Eating Disorders?
Eating Disorders are a group of conditions marked by the disruption of eating patterns. This could be due to weight and shape anxiety, controlling different aspects of your life or loss of control with diet.
If you are concerned or fixated with your weight and are eating either too much or too little to sustain you, if you cover up weight loss and/or become ashamed of your eating behaviour, you may be going through an eating disorder.
Eating Disorders are mostly seen in young adults aged between 13 and 17 years old. However, they could potentially develop in anyone at any age.
Ultimately, Eating Disorders are linked to any unhealthy relationship with food, such as using it to try to control emotions and challenging situations.
The three best known most common eating disorders include:
- Anorexia nervosa – over-fasting due to obsession with weight
- Bulimia – taking extreme steps, such as food regurgitation, to avoid gaining weight
- Binge Eating Disorder (BED) – overeating, eating until you feel very ill or uncomfortable
