What is Depression?

Depression is a mental health disorder that can negatively affect mood, work, learning and lifestyle and even lead to physical health issues and disability.

We must stress that depression is not trivial, ‘made-up’ or a sign of weakness. It is not the same as general sadness or mood or something you can just get rid of by ‘pulling yourself together’.

Depression is a genuine, diagnosable and treatable mental health condition that affects 4 - 10% of all UK adults at some point.

It can take a variety of forms, which include post-natal depression and seasonal affective disorder.

What causes Depression?

Depression can be caused by chemical imbalance in the brain. It can be triggered by challenging life events and amplified by personality traits like self-criticism.

It can be inherited from parents and often manifests as we age, especially if untreated.

What are the symptoms of depression?

If you find you are feeling low in mood and have less energy, if you lie awake at night worrying or sometimes feel tearful for no reason, you may be suffering from depression. Don’t keep it to yourself. Contact someone, be it a friend or Talkmind.

People with depression may experience:

  • a low or dark mood that can last a fortnight or more
  • inability to enjoy or engage in socialising or activities
  • feelings of low self-esteem, hopelessness or guilt
  • disturbed sleep
  • changes in appetite and weight loss or gain
  • an impact on family life and relationships
  • reduced concentration levels
  • reduced objectivity
  • crying for no apparent reason

These can lead to a general inability to function and, in extreme cases, a feeling of dislocation from reality.
