What is Burnout?

Say the word ‘Burnout’ to many people, they may well picture a highly stressed executive in a powerful position, perhaps red faced and loosening their tie.

The fact is, Burnout can happen to anyone – a student, a homemaker, a teacher, a carer. It is a state of exhaustion – mental, emotional as well as physical.

While it is not strictly speaking a medical or mental health condition, it can cause long-term mental-health issues if not taken seriously.

It is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an ‘occupational phenomenon’ i.e., symptoms that are linked to a health-related cause.

It is not simply another name for stress. It can be caused by periods of excess pressure or stress, but the effects can last far longer. You can be stressed and continue to operate effectively. With Burnout, this is not the case.

What are the symptoms of Burnout?

Repeated demands and pressures from work, family or life in general can drain personal resources to an extent that there is a kind of shutdown.

The symptoms of Burnout range from the mild to the serious, and can include:

  • loss of concentration
  • overeating or drinking
  • irritability, even anger
  • loss of energy and motivation
  • persistent worrying and obsessing
  • feelings of worthlessness
  • feeling trapped or helpless
  • feeling overwhelmed and lost

Burnout does not simply stop. If you suffer from this, ask for help. It is nothing to be ashamed of. It is not a sign of weakness or lack of resilience. Burnout is real.
